Frequently asked questions

What is the Air Quality Index (AQI)?

The AQI turns the concentrations of several pollutants into one number from 0 to 500. The higher it is, the more polluted the air. Each country uses its own scale: India publishes the National AQI (NAQI), China the MEE AQI, and most other countries, including the US, use the US EPA AQI. Read the full AQI guide.

Which city has the worst air quality right now?

Banjarmasin, Indonesia has the highest reading among cities with monitoring stations, at US AQI 277 (Very Unhealthy). See the full world ranking.

How often is this data updated?

Country pages refresh every few minutes from each government's monitoring network. Most networks publish hourly; the world ranking refreshes three times a day.

Where does Good Air get its data?

From official monitoring networks: CPCB in India, the US EPA's AirNow, China's CNEMC, the UAE's NCM and EAD, Indonesia's KLH and BMKG, Thailand's PCD, Malaysia's DOE, Singapore's NEA and Vietnam's CEM, plus stations shared through OpenAQ. Modelled estimates are never ranked.
